The creator of the gardens was Dr James Smart VMH. who moved to Marwood in 1949. The land that is now Marwood Hill Gardens consisted then of an old broken down walled garden and a few fruit trees. The rest of the land was pastureland with a small stream running through the valley.

Within the gardens there are many collections of plants. The large collection of Camellia numbers well over eight hundred different cultivars. These are grown in a large greenhouse as well as in various parts of the garden. Magnolias are a recent addition and there are over eighty, which are a stiking feature in March and April. Betula, Eucryphia, Eucalyptus, Rhododendron, Hosta and Iris are strongly represented in the garden.

Greenway, Dartmouth

Greenway has been an important Devon property for over 500 years. There have been a number of interesting owners over this period, each leaving their mark on the estate we treasure today. The most famous being Mrs. Mallowan, between 1938 and 1959, better known as Agatha Christie. She could not resist buying Greenway. With her husband Max, who was later knighted for his services to archaeology, they became very attached to the place. It became their holiday home. Both were keen gardeners, ordering from Veitch, Treseder and Hillier. Even after the outbreak of war, Max continued listing wild flowers in the garden.

The visit to Greenway will take around three hours and you will be allocated timed tickets to the house on arrival. On busy days, you may have to wait for up to two hours to gain entry, during which time you will be able to enjoy the garden, barn gallery, café and shop.

Heddon Hall, Lynton

Located at Parracombe on the western edge of Exmoor National Park. There has been a parsonage here for centuries, but the present house was rebuilt in 1827 by a promising young architect, Thomas Lee, who was responsible for several other West Country houses, including nearby Arlington Court and the Guildhall in Barnstaple. In the late 1980's the house underwent a programme of comprehensive restoration, alongside the garden which has attracted widespread admiration. Jane Keatley began her work here in 1987, with creative input from luminaries such as Carol Klein and Roy Lancaster. She has made it very much a gardener's garden, with rare species, ferns, shrubs and trees all thriving in their spectacular valley setting. It has been open annually for the National Garden Scheme for 15 years and is now open more regularly in the summer. The walled garden has clipped box hedges and cordoned fruit trees as well as flowers, herbs and vegetables. The mainly herbaceous rose garden leads onto a glorious informal rockery and bog garden, where the River Heddon runs into the three recently renovated ponds. Behind this detail is a backdrop of mature oaks, beeches and acers, as well as a wide range of magnolias, rhododendrons and camellias. All of these provide colour the year round, starting with hellebores and snowdrops in the winter, then daffodils and bluebells giving way to spring and summer colour, which continues all the way through to the hydrangeas well into the autumn.

Cadhay's house and gardens are a Devon destination Listed by Country Life as ‘one of the top ten manor houses in the country’, Cadhay is a splendid manor built in 1550. The present owner, Rupert Thistlethwayte, has spent the better part of a decade restoring Cadhay to its previous splendour while introducing modern comforts such as heating, additional bathrooms, as well as contemporary furniture of his own design to complement the antique furniture. The result is an understated, pleasing mix of the historic and the modern, and a lived-in comfort that makes a stay at Cadhay a true delight. Cadhay's garden is beautiful but it is not a formal show garden. Nonetheless gardening enthusiasts come here to enjoy its informal and natural design and relaxing beauty. The house is approached from the north down a lime tree avenue. On the east side it looks out over lawns with a ha-ha giving a seamless view over parkland - a very popular venue for wedding receptions. After farm buildings on the south side were demolished in 1910, a border was established and a lawn was laid out and planted with Irish yews leading to the mediaeval fish ponds. Tiverton Castle Gardens, Tiverton

Few buildings evoke such a feeling of history as venerable Tiverton Castle, which celebrated its 900th anniversary in 2006.

Originally built in 1106 by order of Henry I, and later rebuilt and much enlarged in the 13th and 14th centuries, it was once home of the powerful medieval Earls of Devon and of a Plantagenet Princess. With later additions and alterations down the centuries all periods of architecture from medieval to modern can be seen, with beautiful walled gardens within the romantic ruins.

Besieged during the English Civil War by General Sir Thomas Fairfax, it fell due to a lucky shot hitting a drawbridge chain. This was the only time in its long history that it saw battle.

Kingston House, Totnes

The gardens and grounds at Kingston are open to the public by prior written agreement. The Court Garden, to be found on the North East corner of the house, was inspired by the popularity of playing cards in the eighteenth century, with the beds being formed to represent the four suits. All of the plants in the garden could have been found in a garden of 1740 with tulips, box, santolina, hornbeam, primula auricula, lavender, and camomile. The South Garden features on the East side of the garden, a pleached lime walk which is being grown as a feature of the main lawn area, whilst the other side of the garden begins with the wild flower garden, (a riot of primroses, snowdrops, narcissi, bluebells, pink campion, wild garlic, and wild daffodils in the spring beneath a broad chestnut tree). Walking towards the house, one passes the remains of a 17th century threshing barn, now part of the walled vegetable garden, with the doorway providing a tantalising glimpse of the formal design. The south aspect of the house is graced with the magnificent Wisteria Sinensis with Rosa Banksii resplendent in spring and an enormous yew hedge with an arch giving onto the formal Rose Garden, completing the symmetry of The South Garden. The walled West Garden is neatly divided in two. One half being an open croquet lawn surrounded by flower beds and espalier trained fruit trees and climbing roses. The other is the formal Rose Garden with a small summer house from which to admire the collection of English roses on the long summer evenings. The geometric garden design laid out with miniature box hedges, is based on that of the original discovered when the soil levels were altered, revealing the original slate keepers. The enclosed vegetable garden has been laid out in patterns. The garden provides much of the local produce used in the kitchens at Kingston including edible flowers for salads such as nasturtiums, and many old variety vegetables such as cardoons and ruby chard.
