Becky Falls, Bovey Tracey

Tel. 01647 221 259

Becky Falls

Becky Falls first opened to the public in 1903 and has been attracting and inspiring poets, writers, painters and visitors ever since, including Rupert Brooke and Virginia Woolf, both of whom stayed here. But its history goes much further than that.

Today's visitors tend to arrive by car or foot (although we're sure many would welcome the return of horse-drawn buses!) but they still come in search of the same woodland valley. The Becky Falls Woodland Park you see today, aside from the cafeteria/gift shop area, has remained relatively unchanged throughout that time. Some visitors come to see what is often described as one of the most scenic and untouched areas of Dartmoor, a hidden, tranquil valley in which wildlife and woodland thrive. Others bring children to enjoy the exhilarating combination of animals and adventure and to find a traditional setting of rivers and woodland in which to picnic, relax, climb over boulders, get soaked or just to wander in a setting where the past does not seem so far behind. Some come to sit on a carpet of bluebells and ponder a magical, mystical, spiritual place of whispered fables and pixie tales of old to inspire the senses and imagination.

Westcountry Wildlife Safaris, Lifton

Tel. 01409 211578

If you are visiting the West Country, or are a resident, why not try a wildlife safari. These operate through the evenings of the summer months. The woodland hides and expert wildlife guides offer a unique opportunity to view some of Devon's most elusive mammals. Come and see a family of European beavers from the woodland hide in “beaver valley”. An introductory talk will give you an insight to the lifestyle, history and folklore of this fascinating animal. This will be followed by a walk through a natural hay meadow to view a beaver family emerging from their sunken burrow at dusk. European beavers have been reintroduced to Scotland and this family group on our organic farm is now one of the first to live wild in England. On a nearby farm another hide offers excellent opportunities to view a wild badger colony in their ancient woodland sett. Bats and perhaps even barn owls are likely to be encountered on the walk from the hide as they emerge from their day roosts to hunt. Evening safaris to view red and roe deer are also possible by arrangement and all tours start from Upcott Grange Farm at 6pm with a short introductory talk. All bookings must clarify what species you wish to view advance. For further details please call 01409 211578

Brendon Manor Stables, Lynton

Tel. 01598 741246

At Brendon Manor Farm and Riding Stables they have livery and the riding deal, which is ideal for those people wanting to ride on a regular basis, and also those with their own horses. They are always on hand to answer your questions, and provide you with honest advice. They are a well established stable with many years of experience to draw upon, and it is from their knowledge and understanding of you and your horses needs that they have developed a Riding Scheme tailored for your convenience: This is for people who live locally and want to ride on a regular basis. This allows people to ride on a regular basis at a reduced rate. With the riding scheme people pay a fixed amount each month and can ride up to a certain amount of hours each month, whenever they want (assuming the horses they want are free). This is also available in the winter and summer (the choice of horses and ponies are more limited).

Riding into the Doone Valley: The Rides - Friendly staff will welcome anyone who wants to ride, including groups, families and individuals. The rides take people all over the open moorland, and down into the valleys and clear streams below. On a clear day you can even see Wales. Generally, they adapt each ride to suit the individuals abilities, taking out mixed ability rides, beginner's rides and rider's rides, and are happy to offer a large group discount. If some people want to canter and others want to just walk that's fine, they can look after you, and if you want to go on a ride where there are only beginners or only riders, just ask.
