The rich farming heritage of Devon means you are never far away from superb local produce that is abundant in hotels, restaurants, Country Inns and Bed & Breakfast establishments. The greens with your Sunday lunch was probably picked half a mile away, the day before. The beef will be from a local butcher who bought from a local farmer at a local farmers market. The game - from a local shoot, the fish and seafood from small family run fishing boats and, in a lot of places, the eggs and chicken from 'out the garden'. I know this from my own employment history. I can shop at the greengrocers in my home town and buy figs grown in a garden in the next road - What's the 'Carbon Footprint' there?
Agaric. A passion and lifestyle for Nick Coiley, formerly Head Chef at The Carved Angel in Dartmouth, for many years one of Britain's top restaurants. While puddings could be iced ginger meringue with coffee sauce or chocolate pot. They have a brief wine list which does not lack quality, with house wines at £14.95. During the week they offer a light lunch at £11.50.

The Seahorse Restaurant. The Seahorse is all about the best in local seafood cooked over a charcoal fire. The pleasure of a simply grilled fish cooked over an aromatic charcoal fire, or a local steak cooked on the bone, charred, deep red and juicy with just a few herbs and some vegetables or salad of the season is typical of the food you will find on the menu.
With the sea right outside the door the restaurant naturally specialises in local fish and shellfish and often fishermen will drop in their catch during service which it will find its way to the charcoal grill in minutes.
The food here is about great produce prepared simply at the hands of cooks who really love to eat themselves. Crabs are dressed to order for the house crab salad and specialities of the restaurant include local bass roasted in sea salt, a plate of locally caught fried fish and the signature, spaghetti with seafood cooked only for two. The seafood is first class. The local meat in the West Country is wonderful and much of what is supplied to the restaurant is reared on nearby Dartmoor and the South Hams, however a wonderful T Bone of Tuscan Chianina can often be found on the menu as can fresh Mozzarella from Naples, new seasons olive oil and Sardinian artichokes & sea urchins.
The Seahorse has a wine list of over 150 bottles including some very respectfully priced classics, the owners want the wine to be drunk and their selection experienced, so each day the owners will select four or five bottles from the list and sell them by the glass. The restaurant lets great produce and simple cooking speak for itself and service is just how you would expect it, so comfortable you could eat here regularly.

Harrys Grill Bar. Harry’s restaurant is named after Harry Hems, a master carver who occupied the premises following its design and construction by the architect Robert Medley Fulford in 1882.
Harry arrived in Exeter in 1886 to work on the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. On arrival, he found a horseshoe lying in the road, which he interpreted as a lucky omen and so decided to settle in Exeter. The premises were then known as ‘Ye Luckie Horseshoe Studios; the lucky horseshoe can still be seen above the main door of the restaurant. On 4th December each year, Harry hosted a Christmas dinner for the aged poor – this tradition is still commemorated at Harry’s with an annual charity dinner.
In November 1993, Simon and Annette Pounds opened 86 Longbrook Street as Harry’s Restaurant. The whole family was roped in and slaved away, successfully establishing Harry’s.
In 2007, Sam’s ‘new baby’, ‘harry’s Grill Bar’, opened just up the road in Northernhay Place, behind Boots. The Grill Bar retains the relaxed, lively informality, characteristic of the original Harry’s, whilst aiming at a more specialist market, as the name suggests. On September 8th 2011 the Grill bar launched its newly refurbished cocktail bar, complete with newly designed bar and restaurant menus.

Cafe Rouge. With a combination of delicious food, great wines and a real ambience, Café Rouge has embodied the style and 'je ne sais quoi' of French dining since it opened way back in 1989.
Now with over 111 sites across the country it's just the place to mull over the morning papers with a cafe au lait and a croissant, pop in for a spot of lunch, share a post-work drink or relax over an evening meal.
The menu covers a range of French classics from croques and baguettes, ideal for a quick and easy snack, to more substantial fare such as steak frites and boeuf bourguignon. Likewise, the wines are predominately French, many made by lesser known producers, and provide the perfect accompaniment to the food on offer. An array of hors d'oeuvres takes in classic French onion and beef soup with a melted gruyere crouton, Café Rouge mussels in white wine, herbs, garlic and cream served with slices of warm french baguette. Salads, pasta and quiches feature largely, as do baguettes and croques. Quick dishes, ideal for lunch, include smoked Toulouse sausages with herb mash, caramelised onions and thyme jus, and penne au legumes. Moving on to more serious stuff we find steaks, an 8oz bavette and thin cut rib eye, with a choice of sauces that include the signature numéro vingt, prepared specially from over twenty secret ingredients. No French menu would be complete without the poulet Breton, or a steak frites before moving on to the crème brûlée, or the tart tatin. Almost invariably the coffee tastes like coffee should, something that sadly can all too often still not be said of our English restaurants, who depend too much upon technology and too little on the acquisition of a certain flair for this important conclusion to a meal.

Parking is easy, there is a large car park (Fairpark) at the bottom of Magdalen Road, and more spaces further up the road. Magdalen Road is a small village style shopping area in the centre of St Leonards.
Cat in the Hat offers excellent value at lunchtime with a two course menu, changed daily, at only £9.95, the evening à la carte is heralded by a complete change of atmosphere as the lights go down, the candles come out and the impression is of walking into an almost completely different restaurant. The menu is changed monthly, but amongst the starters look to find local mussels, steamed in white wine with a julienne of vegetables, shallots and cream or a marinated pigeon breast carved over a salad of fine beans, red onion marmalade, sunblushed tomato and pesto. The main event kicks off with tranche of cod, enveloped in lettuce, with a leek, saffron and dill coulis, and cauliflower risotto or pan fried fillet of wild sea bass with a South Hams crab mash, mussels, a caviar and Noilly Prat sauce, and braised fennel. Their ever popular meat - all from local suppliers - dishes might include Creedy Carver duck breast, roasted and carved onto a stew of autumn vegetables with barley and scrumpy or Westcountry Gold fillet steak, with leek and potato dauphinoise, wild mushroom and brandy sauce and wilted spinach. Desserts are by no means the poor relation on this menu; consider tarte tatin of figs with clotted cream, maple and walnuts or a hot Valhrona chocolate fondant with marmalade ice cream and hazelnut tuile. The outstanding range of West Country cheeses also show up well.

Dinosaur Cafe Restaurant. Dinosaur Cafe and Turkish Meze Bar offers something a little different in deepest Devon. As one Tripadvisor reviewer put it: 'Don't be put off by the exterior, this is the best place to eat in Exeter. From the lamb and chicken kebabs served with the BEST rice in the world to the mixed salad which is fabulous.
The service is always friendly, they remember you after your first visit. There are a lot of very mediocre restaurants in Exeter, this is not one of them.'. Another stated: 'Dinosaur Cafe is a small turkish meze (=nibble) restaurant with excellent view out of the window. Serves common European dishes as well, but I would recommend the amazing Izmir cuisine. Friendly staff, relaxing Turkish-Greek music, real food, delicious çay (turkish tea) is all it takes to have a lovely spot in Exeter. Sometimes, during lunchtime, you have to share the table due to confined space (even better!). You can also take a look at the second hand book library!'. Enough Said!

The Conservatory. Discover the joys of dining in this small but perfectly formed, family run restaurant in Central Exeter. The chefs carefully prepare diver caught scallops, West Country fillet steak, rack of lamb, woodpigeon and cheeses all sourced from Devon. They opened as a café bistro but over time concentrated more on food after realising it to be in such demand. The menu changes each day because according to them, there's nothing worse for a customer than making a choice, only to find it's not available, a problem the constantly varying menu avoids. To give your meal a flavoursome start consider the tiger prawns, poached in coconut milk with fresh coriander and chilli. Mains come forward with attractive options such as pan-fried calves' liver with Anna potatoes, pickled walnuts, sage and balsamic vinegar dressing or roast rack of lamb with pistachio nuts and fresh mint crust. Their carefully researched wine list has two specials, to complement the well-flavoured food.
The food on offer is consistently excellent. The Early Bird Menu is incredible value. There is an interesting wine list & the house wines are of good quality & reasonably priced. Its not just the food that makes dining at The Conservatory a pleasurable experience, its also the atmosphere of the place & the excellent service. Probably the best restaurant in the area!!

Sam formally took over from Mum and dad in 2004 – and Harry’s continues to go from strength to strength. The third generation started working in the restaurant, with Sam’s eldest daughters, Phoebe and Zoe, both inheriting their mother’s flair for the business. Younger daughters Tigerlily and India also lend a hand; keeping the family tradition alive and kicking. And for the early birds, freshly brewed coffee every morning at 8 am (worms subject to availability).
Our ethic: Quality, tasty food at affordable prices; a varied menu with something for everyone and a relaxed, fun, friendly environment for staff and customers. Harry’s uses locally sourced produce wherever possible and coming from a farming background, Sam ensures that Harry’s meat comes from farms with high standards of animal welfare. Built and run by the Pounds family and friends, Harry’s remains a truly great family enterprise and is currently celebrating 18 successful years as a unique independent restaurant.

Dogs may join their owners in the bar area, plus there is a large beer garden where you can enjoy the sunshine during the Summer months and real log fires for those Winter months, which gives a cosy atmosphere day or night.

Prezzo, Exmouth. Prezzo has been delighting diners for over eight years, and this Italian restaurant chain has since been able to expand throughout large parts of England and Scotland with some 141 outlets. Interestingly, the company seeks to restore either impressive buildings or ones of local interest. Their trendy and sophisticated décor usually consists of tiled or wooden floors with delicate lights and colourful paintings, along with wooden furniture and sparkling cutlery, creating a setting that is suitable for a relaxed lunch, a family meal or an evening out with friends. The restaurants are of particular appeal to those who like genuine Italian cuisine, and they use only the best seasonal products, many of which are imported directly from Italy.
This is Italian food at its attractive best, convincing and bringing together the traditional with the modern twist or two against a background of excellent value.

A recommendation from one my friends was the reason for choosing this restaurant. As a meat eater I was sceptical about going and that the food would be just plain boring… but how wrong I was! The food is of high quality and there is lots of it. The Vegetarian restaurant offers three rotating menus with three choices per course. Another excellent idea is that you bring your own alcohol. I was so impressed that I have been back 5 times since my first visit and I would recommend it again and again.

Chimes Restaurant. The Restaurant in St James Place has recently been taken over by local chef John Lawnikowicz who has come up with a mouthwatering menu with a Mediterranean flavour.
Dishes vary from nibbles of hummus and olives for those looking for a light bite, to fresh fish of the day, homemade meatballs or grilled halloumi with mediterranean vegetables for the hungrier guest! Chef Lawnikowicz has over 10 years experience in the kitchen, cutting his teeth in the kitchen at the Mortehoe Brasserise. He continued to chef here for 3 years before taking up a position at Damien Hirst's Ilfracombe eatery The Quay Restaurant, where he remained for 5 years until they closed a couple of years back. He has since been working at The Woolacombe Bay Hotel before deciding to open his own business at the end of last year.

To book a table call 01271 866233.
A very good restaurant offering a variety of food including fish dishes. I have to say that the food is of high quality and I would recommend it with no hesitation. As always a restaurant depends on its chef, and John is very passionate about his food and this comes across in how the food is prepared and cooked. I have eaten there several times and will be booking again soon.

Clarets Restaurant. Clarets restaurant was formerly home to Coates Dairy and is beleived to have been either a stables, blacksmiths, or both many years ago.
In 2006 the building was completely derelict, barely even having a roof. Kelvin Turner, a builder of many years experience, imediately saw the potential the building had and Clare, although slightly more hesitant, went along with it and between them set to work applying for planning permission and drawing up plans.
Work on the building started in March 2007 and by October 2007 Clarets was ready for opening, and the rest is history.
When you visit the restaurant you will now find Clare in the kitchen, cooking up delicious meals.
Opening hours: Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings from 7pm.
Plantation House Restaurant. Nestling on the sunny side of the River Erme valley with a south facing terrace for summer aperitifs, a lounge bar with an open log fire for the chilly winter months and two intimate dining rooms, Plantation House is a food lover’s destination.
“ …an irresistible waft of baking bread, and the heady fragrance of cut herbs; tangerine sized scallops cut from the shell ; a basket of eggs from the hens; bowls of raspberries from the walled garden; stock pots gently simmering… ”
We do not simply seek out the area's finest produce, we also take supplies of ingredients one step further. On our menu therefore you will find not only traditional, classic ingredients such as West Country lamb, beef, duck, pork and cheeses but also wonderfully fresh, seasonal ingredients that have been caught or foraged from nearby shores and estuaries, fields and hedgerows. Expect the first of the wild garlic, rock samphire, elderflowers and edible mushrooms; rod and line caught fish. Seaweeds are gathered, prepared, cooked and paired with local seafood.
Prime young wild fallow venison, rabbits, woodcock and partridge come from neighbouring estates and may be traditionally cooked or, perhaps, home-smoked. We also use vegetables, fruits and herbs from our own and neighbouring gardens, and eggs from our own hens.

The Millbrook Inn. We live, eat, breath and sleep food... We came to the Millbrook with very clear ideas about what the pub should represent on the food front. Not Gastro – but inspired country food, obviously locally sourced, mixing up good pub grub and simple restaurant food. Then along came JP with the inbuilt belief that rural French “Auberge” type food is what we should be doing. We thought we were! He has lifted our menu to a different level with his classical training and his family recipes combined with the best the South Hams can offer on the meat and fish front.
Our lunchtime and evening menus offer more formal choices, but in addition we can suggest a simpler and slightly lighter bar menu with things such as Bath Chaps as well as smmoked Haddock bean cassoulet. As for puddings! JP, Gareth and Georgia excel themselves! You may not think you want one, but once you see them going out to other tables we can promise you – you WILL change your mind.

The Harris Arms. When you roar into the car park, hot off the A30, the first thing you'll see is the fantastic view - rolling Devon borders countryside with Brentor and its church in the distance - you may even catch a glimpse of Reg, the strawberry blonde monster-sized cat (the legendary beast of Portgate...) and Jerry the cockerel and his lovely hens.
The aim at the Award Winning Harris Arms is to serve 'Honest Food' - food with substance and style - which has been sourced locally and cooked by the team in the kitchen. They have a great, regularly changing 'Specials Board' with exciting meat, game, poultry, fish and shellfish creations.
The beef, lamb and pork are supplied by Phillip Warren of Launceston & Howells of Tavistock, local farmers, foragers and hunters and represents the best quality available locally. The poultry comes from Creedy Carvers of Cullompton. The fresh fish comes from Dennis Knights of Port Isaac who are renowned for the quality of their produce, the lobster, when available, comes fresh landed by Boscastle Seafood - plus the occasional 'catch' from Andy on his day off! The cheeses are artisanal and generally West Country in origin and represent the best available from Country Cheeses of Tavistock.
The great wine list, which has won awards too, is pretty cool, with wines sourced from a network of merchants, small growers, or made by modern, ecologically sound wineries. Some wines are imported direct. All their wines are really good value for money.

Bistro One. Well known restaurateur and wine writer Stephen Barrett is the owner of the refurbished Bistro One, situated in one of Plymouth's oldest Victorian trading areas, 'tranquil' Ebrington Street, and is just a few minutes walk from the famous war monument 'Charles Church' and the University of Plymouth. Modern bistro fare that includes dishes created from fish, seafood and shellfish from Plymouth or Looe, game from Dartmoor, and beef, lamb and pork from Cornwall, is served there. Start your day with a 'Full-On Scoff' Westaways sausages and hog pudding, dry-cured bacon, eggs, hash brown, mushrooms, tomatoes and beans - said to be 'the best breakfast either side of the Tamar! Consider lovely Barbican seafood chowder followed by mains of fragrant rare beef with tomato, chorizo sauce and Chinese noodles, or roasted steak of Cornish pork loin with smoked bacon, puy lentils and pickle. Few other desserts can surpass the goodness of Sally Black's 'lovely lovely' cake. This is truly a neighbourhood Bistro worth searching out in a sea of mediocrity. 'Lunch for a Fiver' arrives with loads of seasonal choices, and wines by Stephen Barrett will always be of great value and originality at Bistro One.
Chloe's. Chloe's Restaurant is arguably the best in the city of Plymouth. French chef Didier Franchet and his fiancée Jo have clearly decided that it is time modern French cuisine came to Plymouth, and few would disagree. Every meal at Chloe's is a satisfying memory. The menu is inspired by Pierre Gagnaire and Alain Ducasse whose experience gleams through an array of dishes chosen from a combination of old favourites and interesting twists on traditional themes. Starters on the carte number around eight and could include mi-cuit of fresh sashimi tuna with homemade avocado tartar, accompanied by sauce vierge, or Chloe's foie gras trilogy. It's not every restaurant where you would take kindly to the suggestion of rabbit leg as a main dish, but you would here, done moutarde and served with gratin Dauphinois. Fresh local scallops in their shell arrives with diced belly pork and mixed vegetables, whilst vegetarians will rejoice in freshly baked aubergine stuffed with a homemade ratatouille and topped with grated cheese and sauce vierge. Chloe's can command fish as fresh as anywhere and the roasted back of local lemon sole with seasonal vegetables in a light lemon butter has to be one of the great classic dishes of all time though the cassolette des copains carries fillet of catch of the day set on a bed of salted cod brandade, flash cooked spinach and Hollandaise sauce with a golden grilled finish comes a very close second. Each dish is a symphony of tasteful design and top class ingredients. Five desserts plus a fine selection of English and French cheeses ranges from a stunning fresh summer fruit salad topped with tangy lemon sorbet quenelle through baked hot cherry clafouti topped with pistachio ice-cream to the most wonderful Chloe's Monte Carlo for chocolate lovers. Lobster and champagne evenings are held around once a month, the centrepiece of which is grilled lobster with cognac and tarragon sauce, starting with lobster bisque and croustille. A wine list makes up for its brevity by the skill with which it is chosen, starting with an unoaked Terret from Michael Laroche and moving upwards. A reserve list awaits attention from the discerning wine connoisseur. Close by is the Theatre Royal and Chloe's opens at 5.30pm for pre theatre dinners, and bless them, they do supper after the show for orders taken between 10.00 and 10.20pm. This place is a great find and the sort of restaurant that cares for its regulars whilst providing a welcome surprise for newcomers.
The Artillery Tower. Run as a restaurant, serving delightful British food from mainly local ingredients, since 1998 by Peter and Debbie Constable, Plymouth's Artillery Tower was built for strategic control of the entrance to Plymouth Sound and to protect Stonehouse from seaborne attack. It dates from the early 1500s and is one of the oldest complete military buildings on Plymouth's seafront. It houses now a restaurant that is noted for its attention to mainly small, local and regional producers, the stunning views over the Sound to Drake's Island and Mount Edgcumbe, and its warm and welcoming staff and atmosphere. Peter was head chef at Piermasters Restaurant, Plymouth, and before that pastry chef at The Horn of Plenty at Gulworthy, near Tavistock.
It is pleasing to find such a splendidly historic building being used for a worthwhile purpose, without suffering in the process. The traditions of classical cuisine are revered and set price menus are available for dinner and lunch. At dinner an amuse bouche of homemade bread, nibbles and a little cup of soup are aimed at sprucing up the tastebuds before moving on to Salcombe crab and avocado salad with bloody mary sauce, or farmhouse terrine with toast and chutney. A Cornish rose veal chop with saffron mash and gremolata gives new life to this once popular dish, and beetroot, blue cheese and red wine blend together to make an unusual rand appealing risotto. As a location for a party The Artillery Tower has a great deal going for it. Locations in The Gun Room or the Upper Deck make various permutations available but the best course is to make an appointment to meet them on site and discuss how this striking and historical building can best bring extra life to your event. A wine list of rather less than 100 draws inspiration from across the world at prices that generally do not cross the £30 rubicon. Menus are constantly changing as they probe the markets and their own ideas at The Artillery Tower, so it's a good idea to check.

Tanner's Restaurant. Tanners can accomodate 45 people, split into three rooms. The well room provides the unique experience of dining by one of Plymouth's original limestone wells. The ambience is relaxed, convivial and steeped in the long history of one of England's most famous sea ports. The deep medieval walls and original features create a truly timeless experience.
Chris and James Tanner's eponymous restaurant is growing from strength to strength and fast becoming a destination for both their unique twenty-first century cuisine as well as the contrasting medieval style décor consisting of refectory style tables, tapestries, an illuminated well and florid quotes inscribed on rough stone walls. Having gained experience at some of the best restaurants in London, Bath, France and New York, the brothers zeroed in on the Prysten House, one of the oldest residential buildings in Plymouth as the venue for their venture in 1999. Within a span of eight years, Tanners scooped the AA restaurant of the year award. The food there is anything but ordinary with dishes such as pan fried Cornish Pollack, lemon and herb linguini, tomato fondue, confit 'gressingham' duck leg with vegetable soup and corn-fed chicken and ham hock terrine, prune, hazelnut and smoked oil featuring on the menu. Guests are also provided a good range of wines from across the globe. Open Tuesday to Saturday for Lunch and Dinner.
Veggie Perrin's. Veggie Perrin's takes a moral stand against violence to animals, hence none of our cuisine contains ingredients derived from cruelty to animals. No fish, prawns, or even eggs are used. The Veggie Perrin's Organisation is inspired by the Hindu principal of Ahimsa (non-violence to all creatures) which was advocated by Gandhi and is a fundamental belief of the founder of Veggie Perrin's, Bill Meswania. This is a family-run restaurant specialising in Gujarati cuisine, made in exactly the same way as we do at home - something that devotees of genuine Indian food appreciate. Gujarat is a state in the West of India, famous for its imaginative and subtly-spiced cuisine...as you'll find out if you visit us. It is also the birthplace of the Meswania family and Mahatma Gandhi (though not necessarily in that order!).
Genuine Gujarati dishes are on offer at Veggie Perrins, which describes itself as the only exclusively Indian vegetarian restaurant in the South West. Not being in any position to refute that I can only endorse their plea that you join the many enthusiasts who flock to their doors. Bury your prejudices for an evening and really savour the wonderful aromas and flavours that they bring to an apparently veggie-starved Devon.
The Wet Wok. The Wet Wok offers Chinese cuisine allied with stunning views of Plymouth Sound. The food is excellently prepared and served with friendly efficient service at a reasonable price. Overall as Chinese restaurants go this is a cut above the rest! A takeaway service is also available.

The Stag Inn. The Stag Inn is recorded as the oldest public house in Devon. Dating back to 1197. This wonderful thatched pub is in the village of Rackenford, about a mile off the main A361 Tiverton to South Molton road.
Re-established in 2007 after an extensive refurbishment the inn has gained a good reputation for its food, service and hospitality.
The bar is open lunchtime and evening and all day in the summer for drinks - two brews from the Exmoor Brewery are the cask ales. Meals are served in either the oak-floored dining room or in the bar, along with a large decked area outside for patrons to enjoy.
Under the management of Sophie, a local lady, and her mother Kate, the Stag is thriving with food and drink of excellent quality. Sophie's family own and run a nearby organic farm, West Yeo, and a great deal of the produce that goes into Matt's kitchen comes from that source. Organic beef, organic lamb, organic chickens, organic pork and more.
Food is served from 12 to 2.30 and from 6.30 to 9.00 every day except Sunday evening. The Stag is closed Sunday evening.
