Tourist Information

The nearest source of local information is available from Exeter Tourist Information Centre.

The city of Exeter dates from at least 250BC and was a garrison town for the Roman Legio II Augusta from AD 50. Its Roman name was Isca Dumnoniorum - City of the Dumnonii.

Today Exeter is the second largest city in Devon behind Plymouth and has a burgeoning population in excess of 120,000 people. The city sits on the River Exe, incidentally Devon's longest river from its source near Simonsbath on Exmoor to its outlet into Lyme Bay at Exmouth over 50 miles away.

Exeter is located in a prime position and is well served by transport links. It has its own International Airport - to the east of the city; is the terminus of the M5 motorway and it lies on the main Paddington to Penzance railway line. The city is served by three railway stations, Exeter St. Davids, Exeter Central and the lesser used Exeter St. Thomas. Branch lines run from the city south to Torbay and Exmouth as well as north to Barnstaple and North Devon via the Tarka Line.

The past decade has seen Exeter grow rapidly and it is now an excellent shopping destination as well as an active university city. The opening of the new Princesshay Shopping Area has really energised the city and recently several high profile industries have set up base here.

The city is very cosmopolitan and quite youthful in character offering something for everyone. There are a number of excellent entertainment venues and a host of food outlets to cater for the diverse tastes it now encourages.

The main sights of the city are:

  • Exeter Cathedral
  • The Guildhall
  • Mol's Coffee House
  • The House That Moved
  • Exeter Underground Passages
  • Exeter City Wall Trail.
The city has a premiership rugby team - the Exeter Chiefs and Exeter City FC playing in League Two of the football leagues. Exeter is twinned with Rennes in France and Bad Homburg in Germany.
