Dartmouth is characterised by its myriad of ships lining the estuary of the River Dart. Vessels of all types, shapes and sizes fill every available anchorage. A fine 15th Century castle stands guard at the entrance to the harbour. The town's museum lists some of Devon's most famous mariners such as Drake and Raleigh.
The port of Dartmouth has been in existence for about 1000 years. There are records of warriors assembling here before transport to the Middle East to fight in the Crusades of 1147 and 1190. In 1588 ships anchored here in readiness to support the fight against the dreaded Spanish Armada. The military still in evidence at the imposing Britannia Naval College built in 1905.
The town is a mecca for tourists and nautical types, especially during the Dartmouth Regatta, eager to soak up the ambience of the town. It has a resident population of about 6000 increasing many fold in high season. Highlights include:
